March kicks off three (3) months worth of a crazy busy spring calendar of Arts events. And what a wild ride it is going to be.

Frame of Mind: FOM Series 3’12 presents “Intersections” by Whitney LeJeune

Frame of Mind is making a strong start with Intersections, an exhibit by Whitney LeJeune, which depicts brief moments of wonder in life, which profoundly focus, direct, or redirect our minds and which eternally change us and the world around us. She focuses on “moments where world meets wonder.” Opening her studio in 2009, Whitney is a full-time, working painter. Her style is influenced by her early childhood home of Austin TX, the southern elegance she finds in her family’s SC roots, and a desire to constantly push herself in her approach to her subjects. She studied at Savannah College of Art and Design where she received her bachelor’s degree Fine Arts, Painting in 2009. Leveraging her view of the world, she loves to build her work on the feminine form. However, inspired by many subjects, her work includes portraiture, landscapes, architecture, and cover art for published novels.

As to what drives her, Whitney explains, “My work is painting and bringing passionate art into peoples’ lives . . . Capturing and sharing creative energy on canvas brings pleasure, curiosity, and intellectual energy into our lives, homes, work and public places. It is what I love to do.”

Anastasia & Friends: The Painted Violins

During the month of March, I’m thrilled to announce Anastasia & Friends has teamed up with the South Carolina Philharmonic for The Painted Violins exhibition. The SCP has given each artist a violin to sand, scrape, paint, deconstruct and reconstruct – anything the artist chooses to do with them. These works will be auctioned off to benefit the Philharmonic.

The 19 artists who have transformed the instruments into works of art in this special exhibition are: Bohumila Augustinova, Michael Bolin, Jarid Lyfe Brown, Warren Brussee, Marvin Chernoff, Thomas Crouch, Cindia Deith, Scott Denis, Toni Elkins, Dylan Fouste, Robin Gadient, Lisa Gray, Mary Ann Haven, Paul Kaufmann, Michael Krajewski, Matthew Kramer, Ron Marsh, Curran Stone, Lindsay Wiggins

Bids will be accepted in the gallery via silent auction throughout the month of March, and we will have a closing reception on the 29th from 6 to 9 pm. Gallery hours are Monday through Friday from 9 to 5 and by appointment.

The Jasper Magazine EconoBar will be in the gallery serving libations with SUGGESTED DONATIONS of $2 for cheap beer & decent wine and $4 for big spender craft brew.

Here’s to all the artists who have so generously donated their time and talent to come up with some incredible concepts for the show! I’ve seen some of the completed violins along with many of the pieces in progress, and there’s no doubt in my mind that this show will bring a huge smile to your face! You’re going to love it!

S&S Art Supply: TRANCE: Devon Jeremy and Beth LaRose

S & S Art Supply is proud to host this two-woman exhibition for March’s First Thursday on Main event. These two talented ladies both find inspiration from what surrounds them – nature, love, and harmony. Both artists are not only good friends, but have many shared feelings about the artistic process. Devon finds drawing a “process of free association…luring her into self-hypnosis, dictating what goes down next.” Beth says, “A lot of my inspiration comes from nature and from awareness of other dimensions unseen to human eyes. When I am in a creative cycle, in the early morning in that space between being asleep and fully awake an entire painting is just sitting there in my mind’s eye.” Both artists reflect on their life-long love of art, blossoming since childhood. Beth says, “These paintings are the most fun to paint because they are infused with all the imagery of the subconscious and with much emotion.” Devon says, “Now, it frees me to express themes with no intention but that they resonate with the human condition.”

Devon Jeremy was born in New Jersey, to an artist-mother and a father deeply involved in the cultural smorgasbord of New York City, so that her first 18 years were steeped in all the arts. South Carolina has been her home since then, where she was a pediatric nurse; then a full-time mama rearing 3 children; and now devoted to making art and tending permaculture on a tiny homestead in Olympia. She is an artist, musician, and writer, mostly self-taught.

Beth LaRose was born in Texas to a mother who is an artist. Her mother’s ancestors were German settlers who put oil to canvas portraying pioneer settlers and Native Americans. These paintings are now part of the University of Texas permanent collection. She has been drawing all her life and took up water colors as a teenager. While raising her three children in Winnsboro, SC she honed her skills by painting many of the historical homes in Fairfield County and teaching art classes to children and adults.

Tapp’s Art Center: THE COLLECTORS

The Fountain Room: Tapp’s Arts Center welcomes the Fountain Room, which will open for lunch in early April. First Thursday attendees are invited to come check out the space and speak with owner Frederick Hogsett about the Fountain Room’s plans.

In particular, Hogsett and Tapp’s invite the public and former employees (or their friends and family) of Tapp’s department store and The Fountain Room to bring any photos they have of the Fountain Room and their memories of the lunch counter. The Fountain Room plans to document the memories for use in the reinvented Fountain Room, and several photographers will be on hand to snap photos of the former employees.

Main Gallery Space: Tapp’s will show art by local students, from elementary to high school beginning Thursday, March 1. Tapp’s invites the public to mingle with the student artists and see their work, which will cover 300 linear feet of wall space in the gallery at Tapp’s. The student show will hang through the month of March.

Silent Auction: You are cordially invited to attend a silent auction of artwork by 15-year-old Emily Grace Harmon. Back in September of 2011, she was granted a wish by Make-A-Wish® Foundation: her very own art studio. So touched by the generosity of others, she decided to have an art show and donate the proceeds back to the Make-A-Wish® Foundation so that other children would be able to have their wishes granted, too. She is a very special young woman living with epilepsy who wants to “pay it forward.” Come and share in the joy and inspiration that her artwork provides to many.

Here is Emily Grace’s story: Fifteen-year-old Emily Grace is battling to live a normal life with intractable epilepsy and says that doing art projects is a form of therapy. Make-A-Wish® volunteers came to meet her and to find out what her one heartfelt wish would be…a place where she could go and escape reality and slip into a creative world where she was at peace. So her choice was easy—Emily Grace wished to have her very own art studio.

Weddings 101

Wedding 101 will be open from 6-8:00 pm on 2/2/12 for First Thursday! We are excited to have Betsi Jordan with Prestige Travel in the studio to host a FREE Honeymoon 101 seminar. We will also have catering samples from Alfresco Mobilista and frozen treats provided by Rent-a-Margarita. Come see us upstairs at 1537 Main Street, and see all of the resources our vendor library has to offer.

Wine Down on Main, one of the newest additions to Main Street will be hosting Alicia Leeke for February’s First Thursday. Alicia will be showing a collection of abstract landscapes.

Frame of Mind: FOM Series: The Photography of Preach Jacobs

One of Columbia’s own sons, Preach Jacobs is a photographer, a musician, an emcee, a journalist, and the founder of Sounds Familiar Records (www.soundsfamiliarrecords.com). He is also the editor of Mo’ Betta Soul magazine (www.mobettasoul.com). You can find this accomplished photographer’s award winning work on the covers of Vapors Magazine, Lo-Fi, and more. As a musician and emcee, he has shared the stage with the likes of 50 Cent, George Clinton, and Nelly, just to name a few. Anastasia & Friends: The Surreal Show Redux

For this month’s first Thursday art crawl on Main Street, Lindsay Wiggins and I are co-hosting a redux of The Surreal Show. Surrealism is a movement in art and literature which began in the 1920′s that sought to release the creative potential of the unconscious mind, characterized by the evocative juxtaposition of incongruous images in order to include unconscious and dream elements. All of the artwork featured in the show was created using the surrealist approach and will include paintings, mixed media, photography, textiles and sculpture by Natalie Brown, Janice Dittmar, Nathan Fiveash, Libby Gamble, Kirill Simin, Lyra Stephens, Michelle Rogers, LIndsay Wiggins, and Anastasia Chernoff.

Surrealism stems from the subconscious mind, so it only made sense to invite Columbia’s most revered hypnotist! Dr. G. Fredric Mau, board-certified hypnotist and owner of Watermark Hypnosis in Columbia, will offer rapid induction performance art as part of the show. Dr. Mau will move volunteers into a hypnotic state very quickly–in 10 to 30 seconds–leading them through a variety of subconscious effects, including catalepsy, memory tricks, and anesthesia. The rapid-induction performance will explore the way participants react to suggestions using the subconscious mind. “The transition from an awake state to a hypnotic state can be achieved very quickly–almost as fast as turning a switch,” Mau says. ”We do some of our best creative work when we relax, as anyone who has come up with a great idea in the shower knows. Hypnosis and art are collaborative partners.” We are honored and excited to have Dr. Mau as a part of the evening’s opening.

S&S Art Supply: Futurespective – Lucas Sams, Early Masterworks

For First Thursday, S & S Art Supply presents Lucas Sams, and possibly a live music performance by a surprise group of local Jazz musicians! This exhibition chronicles a progression from the beginning of Lucas’ early work to more recent paintings. About his artwork, Lucas says, “My work is a visual synthesis of many varied sources of inspiration, from the Baroque to the Surreal. I don’t think about what I am going to create before I paint, allowing the work to evolve and essentially create itself.” He thinks of the artist as an effective conduit, approaching art-making like a mad scientist, combining traditional mediums with organic material and found objects, to create art that has a life of its own, transcending the normal boundaries of art on canvas.

Lucas Sams was born in Greenwood and has lived in South Carolina for most of his life. He has studied art at the SC Governor’s School for the Arts and Humanities, Temple University’s Japan Campus, and USC. He is a painter, musician, writer, and sculptor; he is also a resident artist at the Tapp’s Center for the Arts.

Tapp’s Art Center: THE COLLECTORS

Tapp’s Arts Center, Columbia’s center for art and music at 1644 Main Street, will show From Here to Mississippi, a photography exhibition. Tapp’s invites the public to mingle with the artists, see their work, and most importantly, celebrate the grand opening. University of South Carolina faculty, Kathleen Robbins and Eliot Dudik, both members of the photography department, will display some of their recent work. Robbins and Dudik will be joined by recent graduates and current student members of the University of South Carolina Photographic Society.

Frame of Mind: FOM Series January 2012/ First Thursdays on Main

To kick off 2012, Frame of Mind invites you to come and experience Kindred Harvest, a series of new works from one of Columbia’s fastest growing stars on the arts scene, Amanda Ladymon.

Amanda explains that Kindred Harvest “…investigates the many complexities of family… and the roles played within those relationships. The mother and child bond and reproductive process is one strong influence on this work. Our upbringing affects us all, especially in determining what kind of person we turn out to be. Within this body of work, there are many photographic images used to reflect on my family’s past – all the photographs and drawings were acquired directly from my family albums. The many shapes and organic drawings interspersed amongst the photographic images represent the connective energy between each person, whether it was the memory of loving or possibly more of a longing. The use of circular forms continues to symbolize the connective relationship we have with one another in a biological or conceptual sense…”.

This month at the gallery, Lindsay Wiggins and I are co-hosting an exhibition the epitomizes the method in which we create most of our art … The Surreal Show.

S&S Art Supply:Nature vs. Nurture: Paintings by Lisa Puryear

Step into the New Year with local artist Lisa Puryear’s new body of refreshing paintings for First Thursday on Main at S & S Art Supply! About this exhibition, Lisa says, “I am exploring how the finished work is influenced by the “inborn” images in my mind vs. the things …I’ve learned as an artist and the images I use from photographs for my work. It is interesting to me to see the natural progression of a painting without the use of photographs or a specific image or composition to drive it compared to how more “planned” works progress (and a combination of both!). The differences are very unique and it has become an experiment in nature vs. nurture and how that idea can apply to artistic expression. Her work is inspired by many things in nature andher surroundings. Not interested in realism, she takes the object or photo and transforms it into something unique. Lisa brings her paintings to life using a variety of techniques and interesting colors. The artist hopes that looking at her paintings can evoke a sense of peace and tranquility.

Lisa began painting and creating art at a very young age. She studied painting first under Mildred White at the Sumter Gallery of Art. She continued her studies in art at the University of South Carolina. Lisa is currently a member of the Trenholm Artists Guild in Columbia, SC and About Face at the Columbia Museum of Art. In 2011 she was selected to participate in the Contemporaries Artist of the Year Show, the SC Arts Commission Gala and the Art with a Heart Show benefiting the Ronald McDonald House. Her work has also shown at USC Sumter.

December 2011 version of First Thursday on Main is the 3rd Annual Mingle and Jingle on Main, the kickoff to the holiday shopping season for Main Street. Here is the lineup as of Nov 25th but check back as we are constantly adding to the spectacular list.

Sorry about that, but it is time for Mingle and Jingle and a little Christmas spirit just popped right out.For the spectacular 2011 Mingle and Jingle, Frame of Mind has partnered with one of Columbia’s fastest growing stars in the art scene, Amanda Lady…mon. Amanda has created a whole new body of work, Kindred Harvest, specifically for this show, and we can’t wait for you to see it.

S&S Art Supply: Hung by the Chimney with Care, an installation by Susan Lenz

This December’s First Thursday is going to be HUGE!! We have one of the most amazing artists of the Southeast here at S & S Art Supply! Along with the fabulous DJ Irvin Thompson, it’s going to be one amazing evening.Recently acquired found materials from the South Carol…ina Department of Mental Health’s vacant structures will be transformed into a window installation focusing on the alternative holiday celebrations. Mental patients left behind hundreds of socks in the old laundry facility, thousands of white buttons in the former sewing room, a pile of order forms in the alterations department, and a forgotten artificial Christmas tree with ornaments. Installation artist Susan Lenz will use these items along with a fireplace mantel. Viewers will contemplate those who cling to a traditional holiday but cannot celebrate the season in traditional ways.
“Muses”, a series of related, framed artwork will be featured on the interior walls. The aim will be to create fun, whimsical, mixed media pieces using the collected artifacts.

Using a needle and thread for self-expression, Susan Lenz’s art reflects her interest in the concept of time. Memory, universal mortality, and personal legacy are central themes. Vintage materials and meticulous handwork are important elements that she uses to symbolically connect the past to the present with a nod to the future.

Guest Curator Jeremy Wooten, of Charlton-Hall brings this unique show to Tapp’s Arts Center featuring original artwork by Kent Ambler, Jakie Vasquez, Rob Shaw, Nikolai Oskolkov, Clay Wooten, Earnest Lee “The Chicken Man,” Levi Wright, Ashley Berendzen, Alan Anderson, Jason Williams, Marvin Bailey, Iciar Bravo Tomboly, Alex Smith, and Fausto Pauluzzi.The night will include music by MinorEffect from 5pm-7pm and Shagging with Woody Windham from 7pm-9pm. Also, Kitten Edwards will be roaming the gallery doing her incredible Tapp Dancing act. In the courtyard South Carolina Artists will have artwork on display and there will be a performance by the Cant Kids.

Tapp’s Arts Center also welcomes the members of Art on Main, opening their studio/gallery this First Thursday. The eight members will offer a wide variety of original artwork and workshops. Also Photographer, Jim Seigler, will be new to his studio for this First Thursday as well.

Come inside to visit Darion McCloud, as Santa Claus, and to enjoy some light refreshments. Tour the newly finished studios and performance venue and find out how you can get involved. Singing Santa for the kids From 6:30 to 7:30(Boyd Plaza)
Something Special Florist will be introducing themselves at their new location in the 1500 Block of Main.
Columbia Museum of Art Shop will be having a tent sale in front of their store.
Frame of Mind will be hosting a Eyewear Trunk Show in the tents in front of their store.
The Nickelodeon will be showing holiday themed movies on the facade of their new location in the 1600 block of Main Street.
S&S Art Supply will have DJ Irvin in front of their store (1600 Block)

We are proud to announce the Grand Opening of Tapp’s Art Center.
Tapp’s has been a great asset to Main St for a little more than a year as a building project. A project that was born out of the dreams and determination of Brenda Schwarz Miller and the belief of many artists and supporters that surround her. She suffered much consternation from multiple fronts but stuck it out to provide Main St and the City of Columbia with an absolutley beautiful Art Center that will be the envy of many a city in the US. From all of us (the businesses of Main St) we express a very hearty Thank You to Brenda for believing in her dreams and making them a reality.

Nickelodeon Theatre to Highlight the Move the Nick Campaign during First Thursday

Thursday, November 3
6 – 9 p.m.

The Nickelodeon Theatre, next door neighbor to Mast General Store, will have be giving tours of their future space, screening Move the Nick videos, and serving up beer and popcorn from 5 to 9 p.m.

Total Denial Performing and Drink Specials at Hampton Street Vineyard on First Thursday
