April 25th, 2012
Columbia SC

Frame of Mind: FOM Series presents “Oddity” by Kara Gunter

Anomaly, curiosity, quirk, phenomenon, singularity, “Oddity.” The FOM Series is proud to present the unruly, the irregular, the art of discombobulation created by Kara Gunter specifically for this show. Kara states, “This body of work deals with confusion, being out of sorts or not in harmony with events and surroundings. Ideas of escape from an overworked mind and obsessive thinking, and of being able to reorganize the body in hopes of forming a new reality for one’s self. The new ‘reality’ which is created is, however, a sort of surreal dream state, in which nothing completely feels right or makes sense–where action is redundant and blind.”

To take the case of “Oddity” just a little farther, we are honored to have Armitage Shanks (the master of all things sideshow/circus), FOM’s new celebrity spokesperson and international luminary, on hand to give us a true sideshow feel. You will get to enjoy all that he has to offer as you gather out in front of our place. He will regale you with tales of the oddities within!

And as a special treat, we will have Robin Souls from Dirty Southern Sideshow performing many of the classic acts for your pleasure. Come and experience everything from glass walking and eating to straight jacket escape to fire-eating…and many more.

Anastasia & Friends: “Two for Three”

On Thursday, May 3rd, Anastasia & Friends presents a redux of an exhibition of paintings and sculpture by world class artists, Blue Sky and Alexander Wilds and gallery curator, Anastasia Chernoff called “Three.” Legendary artist and Columbia native, Blue Sky is known worldwide for his paintings and murals and has received “best of show” awards at prestigious art shows all over the world, in addition to being featured in numerous international arts magazines and publications. His famous mural, Tunnelvision, is well known worldwide. “Three” will feature assemblages from his critically acclaimed, traveling “Truck Butts” series.

Alexander Wilds spent many years in Japan as a sculptor and architectural designer and is now Associate Professor of Fine Art at Benedict College in Columbia. Since 1974, Wilds has created a single figurative sculpture each year to document his progress as a sculptor. The show will feature several of these large scale sculptures in addition to other bronze and mixed media pieces.

Surrealist sculptor Anastasia Chernoff will feature two, new hanging sculptures created from stoneware and other mixed media from her most recent body of work, “Salvation Series.”

The gallery is open to the public from 9 am to 5 pm, Monday through Friday. For more information, contact Anastasia Chernoff at 803 665 6902.

S&S Art Supply: “Textures of the South”: Fine Art Photography by Bryce Dixon

“The magic of photography is the unique relationship evoked between the image and the viewer.” This May’s First Thursday on Main will feature unique and exemplary southern landscape photography by local artist Bryce Dixon. Along with the printed photos, the exhibition will also feature Aluminum photographs and newly published books of Bryce’s work. “My photography in aluminum allows for an image to take on a 3-dimensional effect with vivid color saturation while providing a texture and feel that cannot be captured otherwise.” AluminArte is high definition, photographic imaging on aluminum that uses a unique imaging technology. The result is a highly dimensional image embedded physically onto the aluminum, unlike images that are typically printed onto a coating and then applied to paper. These AluminArte photographs will last over 100 years with no fade – you’ll have to come and see them for yourself! “My clients love the richness that comes from the reflective light properties of my media.” – Bryce Dixon

In addition to the amazing work on the walls, the artist will also be selling a limited edition of professionally published books of his photographic works. These books are in full color and thick paper, with a limited edition of 100 of each… “The Capital City” revolves around Columbia’s beauty and “Textures of Charleston” is a composition of low country images near and around Charleston. Teaser, palm sized paperback books will be available for purchase too, only $5 each! The larger hard cover books are 8 1/2 x 11, and will be $40, signed by the artist.

Originally from North Carolina, Bryce Dixon lives in Columbia with his wife and two Shepherds. Known for his photography in aluminum, Bryce specializes in landscapes and commissioned works. His art can be seen at his gallery in the historic Arcade Mall as well as the Columbia Museum of Art.

Tapp’s Art Center:

“What Lies Beneath” by Gwyn Pevonka

Gwyn Pevonka is interested in heroic gesture of the 1950s, but having her own contemporary twist on it and glorifying femininity. Her work focuses on the empowerment of a heroic woman tackling the vulnerability of large-scale, the fragility of openness within her pieces, and the intricate monotonous technique of carved areas. Gwyn Pevonka’s work is intimidating in scale and enticing with the intensity of color. She graduated from Appalachian state in May 2011 with a BFA in painting. this will be her first solo exhibition in her professional career, please join her may 3rd to view; WHAT LIES BENEATH, Gwyn Pevonka’s newest body of work.

Wine Down on Main: Tarses Deux by Jenna Sach

If you missed Jenna Sach’s show last month at the FOM Series, your Main Street neighbors at Wine Down and Frame of Mind have worked with the artist to be sure you can enjoy it before its final close at the end of May. Wine Down presents “Tarses Deux” this month! Come and enjoy the artist’s interpretation of the philosophies of Carl Jung’s shadow self as presented in her photography.

Jenna says, “In art, man has been viewed with the same physique throughout the ages. Tarses is a challenge to the modern concept of what men are physically supposed to look like. Instead, I am showing real men with all their flaws. The idea of Jung’s philosophy about shadows comes into play when I’m lighting the male models. Instead of focusing the photos, lighting, and poses on sexuality, I wanted to explore the darker and subdued side to masculinity. This side usually resides within the subconscious, rarely ever shown…or even known to oneself.”

Grapes and Gallery:

Ssshhhhhh, don’t tell anybody, but it is Anna’s birthday and Grapes and Gallery will be wide open and having a party. “Prettier than Matt” is scheduled to be playing and there will be lots of wine, cake, and painting. Feel free to stop by and enjoy the sounds, food, wine, and fun. Oh, and make sure you say happy birthday to Anna while you are there.

Beer, wine, and light hors d’oeuvres will be served.

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
March 30, 2012
Columbia SC

This month, First Thursdays on Main is being held in conjunction with the Urban Tour. You’ll find the same art venues, the same hours, but with Urban Tour you’ll be able to enjoy some of the non-art venues, which don’t usually remain open for First Thursdays. So, come down and be a part of an even bigger celebration of all that is on our Main Street!

https://www.facebook.com/#!/events/307273769327749/

Frame of Mind: April FOM Series presents “Tarses” by Jenna Sach

Carl Jung said, “Everyone carries a shadow, and the less it is embodied in the individual’s conscious life, the blacker and denser it is. The dark side of his being, his sinister shadow…represents the true spirit of life…” The shadow is a part of the unconscious mind.

The April FOM Series presents “Tarses” by Jenna Sach. Tarses is the follow up to Jenna’s 2011 blockbuster show, “Box.” It is actually the antithesis of Box; Tarses deals with the male physique and the shadow/s that lie within.

Anastasia & Friends: “Three”

Anastasia & Friends will host an exhibition of paintings and sculpture called, “Three.” Three will feature the work of three artists to include the paintings of legendary artist, Blue Sky, sculptor and architectural designer, Alexander Wilds and some new work by surrealist sculptor, Anastasia Chernoff.

Blue Sky is known worldwide for his paintings and murals and has received “best of show” awards at prestigious art shows all over the world; he has been featured in numerous international arts magazines and publications. His famous work, Tunnelvision, is well known worldwide.

Alexander Wilds spent many years in Japan as a sculptor and architectural designer and is now Associate Professor of Fine Art at Benedict College in Columbia.

Wesley Cook, our special guest musical artist from Atlanta, Georgia, was recently nominated as Best New Alternative Band for the Georgia Music Awards. Wes has been selected as one of eight national finalists for Rolling Stone magazine’s, Street to Stage competition and will perform as a part of the evening’s entertainment.

Big thanks to Maria Kennedy Mungo and her never-ending hospitality. She’ll create some delicious treats for us to savor at this special opening.

Anastasia and Friends is located in the front of the Free Times’ building at 1534 Main Street. The gallery is open to the public from 9 am to 5 pm, Monday through Friday. For more information, contact Anastasia Chernoff at 803-665-6902.

https://www.facebook.com/#!/events/137820873011890/

S&S Art Supply: Weighs Heavy! New works from Cedric Umoja

April is the HOTTEST month on Main Street! We’re doubling up again with Urban Tour and First Thursday on Main, featuring artwork by one of Columbia’s most fresh, exciting artists. In addition to the amazingly bold artwork inside, we will be featuring music from Sound Scientist Sunday Morning on the street from 5-7:30 pm, along with Red Road Photobooth from 5-8 pm. Come play dress up and get a funky photo taken of you and your friends as you dance in the street! J Gumbo’s will also be out front of S & S serving hot delicious Cajun creations!

Cedric Umoja’s art takes a unique Urban perspective – street art with an attitude! This exhibition consists of mixed media paintings, drawings and found object sculptures. He will also be creating a site-specific window installation! His medium of choice is paint- house, water, acrylic, and aerosol- and his canvases range from recycled materials including cardboard, waste concrete backer board and the occasional door to traditional canvas and plywood.

“There are several ideas or conversations taking place in the work,” says Umoja. He enjoys having a visual dialogue with the viewer, via use of many different materials and methods. These methods include brilliant colors, symbolism, ethnic expression, psychological, and metaphysical references. “My goal is to bring together past, present, and future means of communicating in a holistic manner to create an old, familiar, and new way of altering the thinking of the status quo!”

Born and partly raised in California, Cedric Umoja has spent most of his adult life in the South. When asked, he will tell you that he’s from here, but California has a special place in his heart. His work is influenced by graffiti, modern European and American art, comic books, and even R-rated movies.

https://www.facebook.com/#!/events/316879445033115/

It is a preview of and marketing for their “The Student Designer” competition, which is a part of Fashion Board at USC’s annual Fashion Week. They will have various small stages designed in cooperation with artists with models on them.

Wine Down on Main: “Low Country Chapels” Photography by J Kee Eck

Wine Down on Main is pleased to present the BFA thesis show of Kee Eck, Low Country Chapels. Kee is a senior at the University of South Carolina and has presented his work previously at Tapp’s and City Art Gallery. Low Country Chapels highlights the rural small churches that are 50 plus years old. “I wanted to document these chapels and illustrate their importance. I have always enjoyed photographing architecture and have always felt a certain draw towards the Low Country,” says Kee.

Wine Down will have a table outside featuring Massimo sauvignon Blanc and Enanzo Tempranillo for $5/glass. Our usual seated service will be available inside.

Wine Down on Main: Wine Down is excited to feature an exhibition by classical realist artist, Tish Lowe, during the month of March. Lowe is an award-winning artist whose work is represented in private collections in Italy, UK, Switzerland, Canada, and the USA. Trained at the Angel Academy of Art in Florence, Italy, Lowe specializes in portrait, still life, and figurative oil paintings in classic realist style. She won Best of Show for her “Portrait of a Young Woman” in a citywide competition in Florence, Italy, and captured the Chairman’s Choice Award for her still life, “The Pram,” at the prestigious International 2007 ARC Salon, competing with over 1600 entries.

After completing her training and several commissioned portraits of prominent Italians, in 2009 Tish moved from Italy to Columbia, SC, to be near family and in 2010 opened a studio in the historic Arcade Mall on Main Street. She recently completed the official portrait of former President Charles F. Teague of Spartanburg Methodist College in Spartanburg, SC.

“A classic realist, I seek beauty in all things and paint to help people see and appreciate that beauty,” says Tish. “The human spirit and the natural world inspire my art. I view outward appearances as expressions of the spirit and strive in my paintings to reflect the essence of the subject that makes it unique.”

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
February 24, 2012
Columbia SC

March kicks off three (3) months worth of a crazy busy spring calendar of Arts events. And what a wild ride it is going to be.

Frame of Mind: FOM Series 3’12 presents “Intersections” by Whitney LeJeune

Frame of Mind is making a strong start with Intersections, an exhibit by Whitney LeJeune, which depicts brief moments of wonder in life, which profoundly focus, direct, or redirect our minds and which eternally change us and the world around us. She focuses on “moments where world meets wonder.” Opening her studio in 2009, Whitney is a full-time, working painter. Her style is influenced by her early childhood home of Austin TX, the southern elegance she finds in her family’s SC roots, and a desire to constantly push herself in her approach to her subjects. She studied at Savannah College of Art and Design where she received her bachelor’s degree Fine Arts, Painting in 2009. Leveraging her view of the world, she loves to build her work on the feminine form. However, inspired by many subjects, her work includes portraiture, landscapes, architecture, and cover art for published novels.

As to what drives her, Whitney explains, “My work is painting and bringing passionate art into peoples’ lives . . . Capturing and sharing creative energy on canvas brings pleasure, curiosity, and intellectual energy into our lives, homes, work and public places. It is what I love to do.”

Facebook event page: https://www.facebook.com/#!/events/306940052699233/

Anastasia & Friends: The Painted Violins

During the month of March, I’m thrilled to announce Anastasia & Friends has teamed up with the South Carolina Philharmonic for The Painted Violins exhibition. The SCP has given each artist a violin to sand, scrape, paint, deconstruct and reconstruct – anything the artist chooses to do with them. These works will be auctioned off to benefit the Philharmonic.

The 19 artists who have transformed the instruments into works of art in this special exhibition are: Bohumila Augustinova, Michael Bolin, Jarid Lyfe Brown, Warren Brussee, Marvin Chernoff, Thomas Crouch, Cindia Deith, Scott Denis, Toni Elkins, Dylan Fouste, Robin Gadient, Lisa Gray, Mary Ann Haven, Paul Kaufmann, Michael Krajewski, Matthew Kramer, Ron Marsh, Curran Stone, Lindsay Wiggins

Bids will be accepted in the gallery via silent auction throughout the month of March, and we will have a closing reception on the 29th from 6 to 9 pm. Gallery hours are Monday through Friday from 9 to 5 and by appointment.

The Jasper Magazine EconoBar will be in the gallery serving libations with SUGGESTED DONATIONS of $2 for cheap beer & decent wine and $4 for big spender craft brew.

Here’s to all the artists who have so generously donated their time and talent to come up with some incredible concepts for the show! I’ve seen some of the completed violins along with many of the pieces in progress, and there’s no doubt in my mind that this show will bring a huge smile to your face! You’re going to love it!

S&S Art Supply: TRANCE: Devon Jeremy and Beth LaRose

S & S Art Supply is proud to host this two-woman exhibition for March’s First Thursday on Main event. These two talented ladies both find inspiration from what surrounds them – nature, love, and harmony. Both artists are not only good friends, but have many shared feelings about the artistic process. Devon finds drawing a “process of free association…luring her into self-hypnosis, dictating what goes down next.” Beth says, “A lot of my inspiration comes from nature and from awareness of other dimensions unseen to human eyes. When I am in a creative cycle, in the early morning in that space between being asleep and fully awake an entire painting is just sitting there in my mind’s eye.” Both artists reflect on their life-long love of art, blossoming since childhood. Beth says, “These paintings are the most fun to paint because they are infused with all the imagery of the subconscious and with much emotion.” Devon says, “Now, it frees me to express themes with no intention but that they resonate with the human condition.”

Devon Jeremy was born in New Jersey, to an artist-mother and a father deeply involved in the cultural smorgasbord of New York City, so that her first 18 years were steeped in all the arts. South Carolina has been her home since then, where she was a pediatric nurse; then a full-time mama rearing 3 children; and now devoted to making art and tending permaculture on a tiny homestead in Olympia. She is an artist, musician, and writer, mostly self-taught.

Beth LaRose was born in Texas to a mother who is an artist. Her mother’s ancestors were German settlers who put oil to canvas portraying pioneer settlers and Native Americans. These paintings are now part of the University of Texas permanent collection. She has been drawing all her life and took up water colors as a teenager. While raising her three children in Winnsboro, SC she honed her skills by painting many of the historical homes in Fairfield County and teaching art classes to children and adults.

Tapp’s Art Center: THE COLLECTORS

The Fountain Room: Tapp’s Arts Center welcomes the Fountain Room, which will open for lunch in early April. First Thursday attendees are invited to come check out the space and speak with owner Frederick Hogsett about the Fountain Room’s plans.

In particular, Hogsett and Tapp’s invite the public and former employees (or their friends and family) of Tapp’s department store and The Fountain Room to bring any photos they have of the Fountain Room and their memories of the lunch counter. The Fountain Room plans to document the memories for use in the reinvented Fountain Room, and several photographers will be on hand to snap photos of the former employees.

Main Gallery Space: Tapp’s will show art by local students, from elementary to high school beginning Thursday, March 1. Tapp’s invites the public to mingle with the student artists and see their work, which will cover 300 linear feet of wall space in the gallery at Tapp’s. The student show will hang through the month of March.

Silent Auction: You are cordially invited to attend a silent auction of artwork by 15-year-old Emily Grace Harmon. Back in September of 2011, she was granted a wish by Make-A-Wish® Foundation: her very own art studio. So touched by the generosity of others, she decided to have an art show and donate the proceeds back to the Make-A-Wish® Foundation so that other children would be able to have their wishes granted, too. She is a very special young woman living with epilepsy who wants to “pay it forward.” Come and share in the joy and inspiration that her artwork provides to many.

Here is Emily Grace’s story: Fifteen-year-old Emily Grace is battling to live a normal life with intractable epilepsy and says that doing art projects is a form of therapy. Make-A-Wish® volunteers came to meet her and to find out what her one heartfelt wish would be…a place where she could go and escape reality and slip into a creative world where she was at peace. So her choice was easy—Emily Grace wished to have her very own art studio.

One of Columbia’s own sons, Preach Jacobs is a photographer, a musician, an emcee, a journalist, and the founder of Sounds Familiar Records (www.soundsfamiliarrecords.com). He is also the editor of Mo’ Betta Soul magazine (www.mobettasoul.com). You can find this accomplished photographer’s award winning work on the covers of Vapors Magazine, Lo-Fi, and more. As a musician and emcee, he has shared the stage with the likes of 50 Cent, George Clinton, and Nelly, just to name a few. In fact, you can hear his latest single, “Baptized” at http://bit.ly/uH2U8P .

For the February 2012 FOM Series, Preach will present photos of the people and places he has encountered during his world travels. Come and enjoy a fresh perspective, as documented by one of our favorite artists!

Anastasia & Friends: The Surreal Show Redux

For this month’s first Thursday art crawl on Main Street, Lindsay Wiggins and I are co-hosting a redux of The Surreal Show. Surrealism is a movement in art and literature which began in the 1920′s that sought to release the creative potential of the unconscious mind, characterized by the evocative juxtaposition of incongruous images in order to include unconscious and dream elements. All of the artwork featured in the show was created using the surrealist approach and will include paintings, mixed media, photography, textiles and sculpture by Natalie Brown, Janice Dittmar, Nathan Fiveash, Libby Gamble, Kirill Simin, Lyra Stephens, Michelle Rogers, LIndsay Wiggins, and Anastasia Chernoff.

Surrealism stems from the subconscious mind, so it only made sense to invite Columbia’s most revered hypnotist! Dr. G. Fredric Mau, board-certified hypnotist and owner of Watermark Hypnosis in Columbia, will offer rapid induction performance art as part of the show. Dr. Mau will move volunteers into a hypnotic state very quickly–in 10 to 30 seconds–leading them through a variety of subconscious effects, including catalepsy, memory tricks, and anesthesia. The rapid-induction performance will explore the way participants react to suggestions using the subconscious mind. “The transition from an awake state to a hypnotic state can be achieved very quickly–almost as fast as turning a switch,” Mau says. ”We do some of our best creative work when we relax, as anyone who has come up with a great idea in the shower knows. Hypnosis and art are collaborative partners.” We are honored and excited to have Dr. Mau as a part of the evening’s opening.

Many thanks go to the Roe Young State Farm Agency for sponsoring wine and cheese during the first Thursday reception.

S&S Art Supply: Futurespective – Lucas Sams, Early Masterworks

For First Thursday, S & S Art Supply presents Lucas Sams, and possibly a live music performance by a surprise group of local Jazz musicians! This exhibition chronicles a progression from the beginning of Lucas’ early work to more recent paintings. About his artwork, Lucas says, “My work is a visual synthesis of many varied sources of inspiration, from the Baroque to the Surreal. I don’t think about what I am going to create before I paint, allowing the work to evolve and essentially create itself.” He thinks of the artist as an effective conduit, approaching art-making like a mad scientist, combining traditional mediums with organic material and found objects, to create art that has a life of its own, transcending the normal boundaries of art on canvas.

Lucas Sams was born in Greenwood and has lived in South Carolina for most of his life. He has studied art at the SC Governor’s School for the Arts and Humanities, Temple University’s Japan Campus, and USC. He is a painter, musician, writer, and sculptor; he is also a resident artist at the Tapp’s Center for the Arts.

Facebook Invite: https://www.facebook.com/events/upcoming#!/events/236779959730495/

Tapp’s Art Center: THE COLLECTORS

Tapp’s Arts Center, Columbia’s center for art and music at 1644 Main Street, will show From Here to Mississippi, a photography exhibition. Tapp’s invites the public to mingle with the artists, see their work, and most importantly, celebrate the grand opening. University of South Carolina faculty, Kathleen Robbins and Eliot Dudik, both members of the photography department, will display some of their recent work. Robbins and Dudik will be joined by recent graduates and current student members of the University of South Carolina Photographic Society.

Frame of Mind is open Tuesday through Friday 10 am to 6 pm and Saturday 12 pm to 4pm, and is located at 1520 Main Street across from the Art Museum in Columbia, South Carolina. You may contact Mark Plessinger by calling (803)988-1065 or via email at frameofmind@sc.rr.com.

So here we are, a new year and yes, even with massive New Year’s Eve production going on on Main St, a new month of First Thursday on Main arts events.

Frame of Mind: FOM Series January 2012/ First Thursdays on Main

To kick off 2012, Frame of Mind invites you to come and experience Kindred Harvest, a series of new works from one of Columbia’s fastest growing stars on the arts scene, Amanda Ladymon.

Amanda explains that Kindred Harvest “…investigates the many complexities of family… and the roles played within those relationships. The mother and child bond and reproductive process is one strong influence on this work. Our upbringing affects us all, especially in determining what kind of person we turn out to be. Within this body of work, there are many photographic images used to reflect on my family’s past – all the photographs and drawings were acquired directly from my family albums. The many shapes and organic drawings interspersed amongst the photographic images represent the connective energy between each person, whether it was the memory of loving or possibly more of a longing. The use of circular forms continues to symbolize the connective relationship we have with one another in a biological or conceptual sense…”.

(*Merriam-Webster …and Dictionary.com)

This month at the gallery, Lindsay Wiggins and I are co-hosting an exhibition the epitomizes the method in which we create most of our art … The Surreal Show.

The show will include sculpture, paintings, mixed media, photography and textiles by Natalie Brown, Janice Dittmar, Nathan Fiveash, Libby Gamble, Kirill Simin, Lyra Stephens, Michelle Rogers, LIndsay Wiggins and me, plus, performance art by Natalie Brown with Alternacirque and Dr. G. Fredric Mau.

Natalie Brown and Alternacirque will perform a very special preview from Alternacirque’s upcoming 4th Annual Bellydance, Circus, & Burlesque Festival of Doom. The big event takes place in Columbia on Thursday, January 12, 2012 at 8:00pm through Sunday, January 15, 2012. You don’t want to miss it! For more information, here’s the link with all the details: https://www.facebook.com/events/167924949956552/ .

Surrealism stems from the subconscious mind so it only made sense to invite Columbia’s most revered hypnotist! Dr. G. Fredric Mau, board-certified hypnotist and owner of Watermark Hypnosis in Columbia, will offer rapid induction performance art as part of the show. Dr. Mau will move volunteers into a hypnotic state very quickly–in 10 to 30 seconds–leading them through a variety of subconscious effects, including catalepsy, memory tricks and anesthesia.. The rapid-induction performance will explore the way participants react to suggestions using the subconscious mind. “The transition from an awake state to a hypnotic state can be achieved very quickly–almost as fast as turning a switch,” Mau said. “We do some of our best creative work when we relax, as anyone who has come up with a great idea in the shower knows. Hypnosis and art are collaborative partners.” We are honored and excited to have Fredric as a part of the evening’s opening.

The Roe Young State Farm Agency will provide us with libations and Maria Kennedy Mungo will create a culinary sensation for opening night! (Big thanks to both Roe and Maria for their continual support of the arts!)

The Surreal Show will run from January 5th though February 23rd. Gallery hours are Monday through Friday from 9 am to 5 pm and by appointment. For more information, contact Anastasia Chernoff at 803 665 6902.

S&S Art Supply:Nature vs. Nurture: Paintings by Lisa Puryear

Step into the New Year with local artist Lisa Puryear’s new body of refreshing paintings for First Thursday on Main at S & S Art Supply! About this exhibition, Lisa says, “I am exploring how the finished work is influenced by the “inborn” images in my mind vs. the things …I’ve learned as an artist and the images I use from photographs for my work. It is interesting to me to see the natural progression of a painting without the use of photographs or a specific image or composition to drive it compared to how more “planned” works progress (and a combination of both!). The differences are very unique and it has become an experiment in nature vs. nurture and how that idea can apply to artistic expression. Her work is inspired by many things in nature andher surroundings. Not interested in realism, she takes the object or photo and transforms it into something unique. Lisa brings her paintings to life using a variety of techniques and interesting colors. The artist hopes that looking at her paintings can evoke a sense of peace and tranquility.

Lisa began painting and creating art at a very young age. She studied painting first under Mildred White at the Sumter Gallery of Art. She continued her studies in art at the University of South Carolina. Lisa is currently a member of the Trenholm Artists Guild in Columbia, SC and About Face at the Columbia Museum of Art. In 2011 she was selected to participate in the Contemporaries Artist of the Year Show, the SC Arts Commission Gala and the Art with a Heart Show benefiting the Ronald McDonald House. Her work has also shown at USC Sumter.
